Stereo separation and balance are very good at the beginning. As it develops, the left hand (most of the left channel, really) gets drowned out. Drums aren't too loud when they lead in the crescendo, everything else seems slow to match them.

That not withstanding, this is a very nice number - the right balance of peaceful contemplation and positive energy to make it more interesting than background music.

Nicely done!

skyood responds:

By slow to match the drums, you mean match in volume (the left channel? All of it?)?

It was (and will be if/as I work on it further) a challenge to get the big increase in feel/"thickness" that I wanted without making it muddy. Now, after a listen or two away from my keyboard, I definitely need to work on that. Plus frankly, I need to make it longer.

Funky

I love songs where the message is ambiguous. Then you can interpret it any way you want.
The distortion is a bit much, but you more than make up for it with the bass. What kind of setup do you have? I know when I do DI, I can get clean sounds like that but no power, with an amp it's the exact opposite.

Anyway, nicely done - especially considering time constraints.

TheSandyman responds:

Thanks for the review! I've got an EMU 0404 external sound card, with 2 jack/XLR plugs, which is 200 euro in Belgium, so I assume it'll be about 200 bucks in the US.
And you can get more power out of your bass by boosting his lows in the musicsoftware.

Well done!

I like this one, very evocative of a triumphant return or something of cinematic equivalence.

My only two criticisms would be that the 'dropout' that happens at 0:33 throws the pulse off. When the music comes back, it feels like the form is starting over, but it's just the last two beats of that measure, so it takes a second to feel the beat again. And secondly, the voices at the end don't line up with the voices at the beginning, making it difficult to loop this.

Otherwise, very nice job!

sorohanro responds:

Thanks for your detailed feedback.
The 'dropout' is actually just the whole lop again. The problem with looping might be the timing which got messed up by the long tail of the reverb.
I will try to fix it somehow.
Thanks again for review.

Wow

Is your real name David Hayter? I think it is. I promise I won't tell anyone.

Gianni responds:

Shh. Keep this between you, me, and the internet.

Keep on Haytin'.

Seriously though, I'm not nearly as incredible as that legend, but that's a HUGE compliment so thank you!

Neo means new

And classical denotes a treatment of music theory as it pertained to Mozart, Haydn, Scalieri and the likes. This is not neo-classical. This is random notes being put into garageband or finale notepad.

topclaw responds:

Actually it was some shitty MIDI composer program :D.

Even though:

I don't go out of my way for this style, I can tell a lot of work went into this. I was particularly impressed with the guitar. Nicely done!

Bad-Man-Incorporated responds:

Thanks a lot man. It will get into your soul if you aren't careful. haha.

That was absolutely:

RAW

And I don't mean that froo-froo Monday night roids show. Although, Edge could use a new theme-song....

CyriltheWolf responds:

XD! That's nice. :D

I'm not an expert,

but I'm pretty sure this qualifies as trance...

or maybe House....

that guy is funny, limping around HE'S SO SARCASTIC!

but anyway, great piece - it was fun to listen to!

Shinrog responds:

I'm still not closed on the genre as well =/
good to know it was fun =)

I hate summaries

The most personal is the most universal. This was very touching and I'm glad you have the courage to share it with us. Even with 4,000 characters I couldn't adequately review this. But that's why we have music.

sorohanro responds:

if i would be a writter i would dissagree, lucky us that i'm a musician
thanx for review and for the very kind words

Don't worry, this review is gay

Well....

It's definitely smiling-at-the-camera humor....ripe for parody. But I like to think that the Audio Portal challenges musicians to be better each day. And this was kind of....

Well,

You know.

SlipperyMooseCakes responds:

This was made 4 years ago. I was actually 13 at the time.

I am a "gun for hire" - I write all original music for the portal. You can commission me (free, of course) to write an original piece for your movie. I write in any style you want, see my examples in the audio portal.
